I think the best description was given by Aaron Titus, Privacy Officer for Identity Finder:
“A cloud backup is much like giving a copy of your house key to your neighbour. By choosing a trusted neighbour, you can be sure that your house key won't fall into the wrong hands, and you will be able to use it you ever lock yourself out. You will also be able to change your lock if your neighbour's house is robbed, or retrieve the key if your neighbour's house is foreclosed.”
In the simplest way possible, cloud back up is Storing your data off-site, on external servers, essential in case of theft or other disaster. Think of Cloud Backup as having an unlimited amount of storage that's highly available, secure and inexpensive.
1. It's cheaper
For one thing, from your company perspective, you save money by not having to provide this service "in-house"; that is, having to employ a full time Information Technology (IT) person simply to ensure that files are continuously being backed up in secure, easily accessible programs or files as well as implementing recovery operations (which can be very expensive in their own right) if data is lost.
From a personal point of view, it's much cheaper and less stressful than trying to restore years of accumulated contacts and data / sending the hard drive to an expensive data recovery specialist, where the procedure often fails anyway.
2. Your data is off-site
You still have access to the backed up information; in fact, you may even have faster access simply because it is separate. This can save you valuable time when you need to retrieve information rapidly, especially if it is necessary because of a loss of data.
The privacy of your backed up information is actually more assured with cloud services, because there is less chance that incidences of "hacking" or industrial espionage or sabotage can occur.
Even if your entire computer system or even the physical property on which your business is located is compromised, the possibility of this having affected backed up files stored in the cloud services apps is reduced, because they were literally in another location.
4. We update and improve the features constantly
This means you don't have to worry about slow retrieval or increased (if any) risk of compromised security that may occur from outdated or even obsolete equipment or software being used.
Your ultimate social media back-up. We back up your data from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Flickr, Gmail, Foursquare, Tumblr and Evernote, with other services to come.
We give you easy access to your information at anytime from anywhere as it's in the cloud and not stuck on one machine like some other back up services.
Although Frostbox will mostly be useful for social media addicts with multiple online accounts, it can be used by anyone from a regular consumer to multi-billion dollar corporations.
If you think about it, most of the data you use daily and rely on is not stored on your hard drive, but services like Facebook (for example: if you, like us store multiple photo albums on your profile), gmail, Twitter… in simple words: it is all stored on external servers governed by pages of T's & C's you probably never read. Those Terms can be changes at any time. Imagine if all your Facebook photos, Twitter followers, years of e-mails and contacts.. just disappeared one day! Just like your computer, your online data should be backed up independently. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of accounts closed due to legal issues. Sometimes you may not even be aware of those, before the account is closed without prior notice.
It is rare that online service will totally lose data, although issues seem to happen frequently. The main, growing concern of all cloud based services are viruses, user errors, and hackers. These are bigger threats now than ever before, and actively targeting online accounts because they are easier to access than your PC. Mainly due to the fact that most of us still tend to use the same (often too simple) password for all of our accounts.
No, never. You use our service for as long as you like. There are no long term contracts or commitments, we offer a discount for annual users though, 12 months for the price of 10!.
Frostbox currently backs up your most important data from:
Facebook (photos and albums, tagged photos, videos, tagged videos, messages, friends)
Twitter (tweets, re-tweets, followers, people we follow, mentions)
LinkedIn (connections, companies we follow, groups we are part of)
Flickr (photos and albums)
Instagram (pictures, followers, people we follow)
Foursquare (badges, check-ins, people we follow)
Evernote (notebooks, notes)
Tumblr (blog, sub-blogs, photos, videos, quotes)
Gmail (inbox including attachments)
Even when registering using Facebook or Twitter one click sign up, Frostbox provides you with a separate username and password. We do this in case you get hacked and your social media account gets taken over or if it gets suspended. Frostbox works independently to the platforms we back up. In case your account gets hacked, your data is still available in your Frostbox account.
No. Currently none of the services facilitate a restore function but Frostbox acts as a framework so you can recreate friends and contact networks from the saved list and all your photos are safely backed up and downloadable as well as messages.
Yes you can download all your friends, contacts, photos etc.
Not yet. We expect to add this functionality in the future.
Frostbox uses Amazon S3 storage which makes your data secure by default. Amazon S3 supports encryption for both secure transit and secure storage in the cloud. With Amazon S3’s data protection features, we can protect Your data from both logical and physical failures, guarding against data loss from unintended user actions, application errors, and infrastructure failures.
We offer unlimited storage for all users so space is not really an issue.
The free trial is for 7 days and totally unrestricted, you can add all your social media accounts.
Currently we do not support Facebook Pages yet but expect to add this shortly.
Yes, We've partnered with Rublon who offer two factor authentication (known as '2FA'). Rublon is an awesome service that authorises your devices so it means that even if a hacker, ex partner, wifi snooper etc. gets your password, they can't access your account unless using the device you authorised, so they'd actually have to know your password and have your phone, or be sat at YOUR computer! The password is useless without using your authorised device to access Frostbox!. Read more about 2Fa and Rublon here
