The series is inspired by the real-world issue of mass incarceration in the United States. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with over 2 million people behind bars. The vast majority of those incarcerated are Black and brown people.

The privatization of the prison system has also been a major factor in the rise of mass incarceration. Private prisons are for-profit companies that profit from the incarceration of prisoners. This has led to a perverse incentive to keep people in prison for as long as possible.

The series also explores the issue of systemic racism in the criminal justice system. Black and brown people are more likely to be arrested, convicted, and sentenced to prison than white people, even for the same crimes.

This is due to a number of factors, including racial bias in policing, sentencing, and parole decisions. The series shows how systemic racism affects the lives of the McLusky family and the people they come into contact with.

The series also shines a light on the flaws of the criminal justice system. The system is often slow, inefficient, and unfair. This can lead to innocent people being convicted of crimes they did not commit, and to guilty people going free.
