What is a "Kunstler Cluster"?

A Kunstler cluster is a term coined by author and social critic James Howard Kunstler to describe a group of rural communities that are working together to create a more sustainable and resilient way of life. These communities are often located in areas that have been hit hard by economic decline and population loss, and they are seeking to rebuild their economies and communities by focusing on local food production, renewable energy, and other forms of self-sufficiency.

The concept of Kunstler clusters gained popularity in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, as many people began to question the sustainability of the globalized economy. Kunstler argued that the world was entering a period of "long emergency," characterized by economic instability, environmental degradation, and social unrest. He believed that Kunstler clusters could provide a model for how to build more resilient communities that could withstand the challenges of the future.

Kunstler clusters are typically characterized by the following features:

• A focus on local food production and agriculture
• A commitment to renewable energy and energy conservation
• A strong sense of community and cooperation
• A willingness to experiment with new and innovative approaches to living

There are many different types of Kunstler clusters, each with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Some clusters are located in rural areas, while others are located in urban areas. Some clusters are focused on food production, while others are focused on renewable energy or other forms of sustainability. Despite their differences, all Kunstler clusters share a common goal: to create more resilient and sustainable communities.

The Kunstler cluster movement is still in its early stages, but it is growing rapidly. As more and more people become aware of the challenges facing the global economy and the environment, they are looking for ways to create more sustainable and resilient communities. Kunstler clusters offer one possible model for how to do this.
